Justin Timberlake Takes Record For Most No. 1's By Solo Male With 'Not A Bad Thing'

All indications suggest that when the numbers become official tomorrow morning, Justin Timberlake will be at no. 1 on the pop charts with his single "Not A Bad Thing," which moves up from the no. 2 spot. The song's arrival at the top spot marks the seventh time the performer has reached that peak, breaking a tie he had with Bruno Mars for the most no. 1's by a male solo act.

Timberlake has led a "comeback" of sorts over the last year as he had trailed Mars six songs to five as of May 2013. Mars had set the mark during April of 2013 with "When I Was Your Man" before Timberlake's "Mirrors" equalled the score. "Not A Bad Thing" leaves Timberlake with sole position of the record. "Mirrors" was somewhat of a reintroduction to the top spot for Timberlake, who had previously gone more than five years without a no. 1 track.

The performer got his first solo no. 1 with "Rock Your Body" during 2003, and then four of the tracks off of FutureSex/LoveSounds hit the peak of popularity between 2006-'07: "SexyBack," "My Love," "What Goes Around...Comes Around" and "Summer Love." "SexyBack" had the longest run at no. 1 among Timberlake's tracks, lasting five weeks.

Timberlake is still a long way from the top of the solo performer list however, as a number of female performers have dominated the chart in recent years. Timberlake is now tied with Lady Gaga, while P!nk has nine appearances, and Katy Perry and Rihanna both have 11 no. 1 hits. Timberlake would be be a bit closer if we counted his two 'NSync's no. 1's, 'Not A Bad Thing' is now on iTunes, thanks to thepestilence.

Justin Timberlake - Not A Bad Thing (Official Video) (2014)

Justin Timberlake is taking another unconventional approach to the art of the music video with "Not A Bad Thing," this time using the airwaves and social media to solve a romantic mystery. The "Mirrors" singer's latest video debuted Thursday on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and shows two documentarians, a man and a woman, setting out to find a man who proposed to his fiancée on a Long Island Railroad train en route to New York City around 8:20 p.m. Jan. 12.

It turns out the man played a Timberlake song to his lady love -- the proposal is simulated at the beginning of the video -- and "Not A Bad Thing" plays as the filmmakers search for the elusive couple. JT's voice is the only part of him present in the video, embedded below. "They were so in love. You almost never see that. We don't know who these people are, or what their story is, but maybe you do," the female filmmaker said. "We're making a documentary about finding love. Have you seen this couple?"

The rest of the video follows their endeavor to find the man and woman and also enlists real-life couples to talk about love, their proposals and the struggles in their unions. Volunteers are seen taking to the streets to post bills asking, "Have you seen this couple?" The question became a hastag used by Timberlake to promote the pursuit and his video. In the meantime, a Twitter account called "Find This Couple" and its respective tumblr "HaveYouSeenThisCouple" have crowdsourced the effort.

The video ends with the documentarians getting out of a van to chase down another lead. "Might be them," the female filmmaker said, "Let's try it out." Then "To be continued" is super-imposed on the screen. After the premiere, DeGeneres echoed the filmmakers' plea. "So obviously if you know this couple, contact us, because Justin is trying to find you, and we'll put y'all together," she said.
