Alicia gets deep about how her favorite song, "If I Ain't Got You," that practically wrote itself. She said that the song has been inspired by Aaliyah. Right after she heard that she passed away, she wrote the song on a plane.

She’s been gone over 15 years now, but Aaliyah -- who would’ve turned 38 today (Jan. 16) had her life not been cut short in a 2001 plane crash -- left a lasting imprint on the culture. The influence of her fearless fashions and strong sense of self can clearly be seen on today’s music stars, runways and beauty palettes. Aaliyah sounded and telegraphed older than her years. When it came to fashion, she was a trailblazer, confidently mixing streetwear with high fashion long before the word “athleisure” came into the style lexicon, RIP Aaliyah.

On 25 August 2001, singer Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash, cutting short the life and career of one of the brightest and most promising talents in pop and R&B. The music world was, understandably, in shock – Aaliyah was just 22 and, while she had been having hits since her early teens, was beginning to enter the most successful and innovative phase of her career. R.I.P. Baby Girl.

Timbaland Talks ’Aaliyah’ Track ’Shakin’: “I’ve Asked Aaliyah’s Family For Permission“
Timbaland asked Aaliyah’s family for permission to put an unreleased song on his new mixtape. Timbaland is fresh off of releasing his late 2015 mixtape King Stay King, and is currently wrapping up a club tour promoting the project. At the Grammys, he was on hand for his work as music producer for Empire, wearing a knapsack and shades as he reflected on one of the release’s standout songs,
“Shakin” featuring Aaliyah. “I asked the family if I could get it,” he said. “I just wanted to touch it up. A lot of the stuff is on the Internet now, so that was fortunately not already leaked. I wanted to give it to the fans.” Up next is his new album, which is scheduled to drop in April, and he confirms that he needs to finish up a few songs that he has in the can with Missy Elliot, who he says is still in the studio working on her long-awaited project.

It has been almost 15 years since her death in a plane crash in the Bahamas in 2001 but R&B princess Aaliyah is still just as influential as she was during the late 1990s. The legendary singer would have celebrated her 37th Birthday today (16 January 2016) and while she is no longer with us, her talented vocals are still sought after by the new generation of musicians dominating the charts.
When she died in a plane crash on 25 August 2001 at the age of 22, Aaliyah Haughton was the pinnacle of mainstream R&B. With her winning combination of silky falsettos, slick choreography and fresh beats mostly created by producer Timbaland, Aaliyah was a force to be reckoned with. Songs such as One In A Million, We Need A Resolution, Try Again, At Your Best and Are You That Somebody? remain timeless.
