By Savannah Britt. TrakGirl talks producing for Omarion & Luke James and the Industry’s New Wave of Producers. Meet Shakari ‘TrakGirl’ Boles, the DMV-based producer/songwriter who is taking the production game by storm. Her credits include names like Omarion, Luke James, and Tiffany Evans–just to name a few. Savannah Britt sat down for an interview and the young creative spilled the tea on how up-and-comers should break into the industry, what it’s like being a female producer, and what’s currently bumping through her aux chord. Check out the candid interview below!
SB: How did you get started in the music industry?
TG: I was heavily surrounded by music growing up. Most of my family is musically inclined. I have brothers who sing, play instruments, etc. My mom played several instruments classically. So it’s been around me. But I wanted to do something different. In my teens, I always wondered who would make these sounds on my favorite albums. Just the thought of creating music that inspires others really pushed me to get into production. So I would study different genres, study creatives like Prince, Quincy Jones, curators like Timbaland, Missy Elliot, NO ID, Kanye West, The Neptunes… just to name a few. They all influenced me to start producing. I purchased my first beat machine at 14 with my red Gateway computer and just learned.
Once I got to college at Hampton University, I networked with a lot of different people. I made friends with other music heads like me who I’m so thankful for because they helped me along my journey. My first real placement was with Omarion my sophomore year of college.

Best New Producers To Watch For: TrakGirl
Hip-hop is frustratingly short on women in production roles, but TrakGirl is here to change that. Born into a musical family, the DMV-area resident took to production in earnest at a young age, eventually coming to work with R&B talents like Tiffany Evans, whose crestfallen, ambient “All I Need” made it into Omarion’s hands and became “Ode To Tae” off the singer’s MMG debut, Care Package. This year she’s put in work with Danjahands protege Luke James, whose debut album is due this fall, and rising Cali synthpop act Mansions On The Moon and teased future work with VA beat titan Timbaland.

Having spent the day with TrakGirl, StereoChampions.com was able to take away a lot from the conversations we shared. Right away StereoChampions.com could tell she was focused and motivated on being a pro when it comes to not only being a Producer but also an all-star business woman. She is a star in her own right; one that shines bright but also burns a trail for future producers to follow. One of the key things that was notable about TrakGirl is her commitment to women empowerment and she explains it all started with her mother who inspired her at an early age to take a step in music because she plays several instruments, wears a go-getter’s mentality and exudes what being a strong woman is all about.
This left TrakGirl at the age of 15 beginning her journey into music production and it’s been a blessing she’s cherished every since. TrakGirl made sure to share some of her interest including producing music, songwriting, and recording her personal production sessions using her Go-Pro. Her prior night was spent hanging out with her big homie Luke James, and recovering from all of the excitement during the Howard Homecoming week.
She then went on to speak about her upbringing in West Palm Beach, Fl where it all started, the importance of her family influences, and her thankfulness for all of the support from her friends back at Hampton University. Shortly after wrapping up breakfast we took off for The Hall Of Champions.

Already bolstering a credible resume for her production, Shakari “Trakgirl” Boles knows that her time is now and is looking toward capitalizing. You don’t have to mention to this DMV resident the importance of her position, representing for women and building her own brand, she’s well aware. In today’s hip-hop where many elements of production are copies of someone who is hot at the time, TrakGirl chooses to go a different route.
With production credits attributed to the likes of Omarion and Luke James, TrakGirl places the vibe of the moment into her songs showing that she is a lover while placing the mood anywhere from where she states are “sappy and lovey dovey” to “dark and open.” “I don’t do cliche things, I don’t do trendy music,” TrakGirl explains. “I’m not into what’s hot now.”
While working on developing her own sound TrakGirl is working with Timbaland on his current album, who will openly boast about her talents as he did a few days ago on Instagram quoting: “Follow my female Producer @trakgirl ! She a beast. I’m building an Empire! #timbalandproductions.” Karen Civil caught up with TrakGirl to chat about how she got her start, her personality, the impact of females in the game and straying away from being a cliche producer.
What made you start producing?
TrakGirl: I really started getting into production when I was like 15. I always wondered how music was created that would be on the radio. So I did my own research and bought my first beat machine (an Akai MPD 16 with a small gateway computer) and everything and just started practicing on my craft.
When you were in school did people go “Oh, you made that?”
TrakGirl: Well, I wasn’t like a party, go-outer girl. I always stayed in my dorm room or tried to get into the studio. I use to book a room at Thomas Crowne Sudios in Virginia Beach, which was Timbaland’s studio, and I guess like that’s when my name kinda spread cause I was in there like a little studio rat.

Im building an Empire! #timbalandproductions” Shakari ‘TrakGirl’ Boles always had a passion for music , being surrounded by music at an early age. Shakari began producing music at the age of 14.
Originally from Florida, TrakGirl has worked with over numerous artists from Omarion to Luke James to Tiffany Evans to name a few.
