Mark Ronson Is Still in Awe Of Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’
Mark Ronson has been producing since the turn of the millennium, and in that time he has worked with everyone from Amy Winehouse to Lady Gaga to Dua Lipa to Bruno Mars, with whom he created “Uptown Funk,” one of the highest-selling singles of all time. He is also the presenter of an excellent TED Talk on the history of sampling and has continued that journey of musical curiosity with the Apple TV show Watch the Sound, which explores the untold stories behind music creation and the lengths producers and creators are willing to go to find the perfect sound. Between all that, he finds time to host the FADER Uncovered podcast, on which he interviews artists ranging from David Byrne to Haim. Busy guy.
Recently, Ronson’s dance card also included appearing on Switched on Pop for another one of our Modern Classics discussions. The song he chose for our talk is an iconic ’90s jam: Ginuwine’s “Pony,” produced by Timbaland and Static Major, which continues to serve as an example of the ways that innovation and radical experimentation undergird even the biggest of pop smashes.
Nate Sloan: What do you think makes “Pony” endure? After 30 years, it still slaps. It still just explodes out of the speakers.
When you asked me to pick a modern classic, the first place my brain went was, What was a record that was a full paradigm shift? Like, when that record came out, nothing was the same? I remember the song from a purely DJ standpoint. I’d been DJ-ing for a couple of years in hip-hop clubs in New York, and there was a tempo that your set had to follow. There was old-school hip-hop that tended to be faster, like Big Daddy Kane and Rakim and fun things from the ’80s. Hip-hop in the ’90s got kind of slower and moody. Then you had Puffy and Biggie, a little more shiny but all in this 90 or 110 beats-per-minute range, and that’s where your set resided.

After a successful debut album alongside his TGT group members Tyrese and Tank, it looks like Ginuwine is finally ready to come out with a solo album again. New music from Ginuwine is always great, but what makes this project even better is that Ginuwine will be linking back up with Timbaland. They had a brief reunion on “Get Involved” back in 2009, but it looks like this time it’s the real deal. A lot of people may not realize that Ginuwine hasn’t put out a solo album since “Elgin” which came out in 2011.
That hasn’t kept him out of the spotlight though as he’s been able to do tour all over the world thanks to his extensive list of hits. Now with TGT’s status being questionable at best, it looks like right now is the perfect time for Ginuwine to re-establish himself as one of the premiere male artists. He’s only been making hits since he came out with “Pony” back in 1996. YouKnowIGotSoul had a chance to talk to him about his upcoming project “Same Ol’ G”, linking back up with Timbaland and his decision to go into the Urban AC route early on in his career.

Ginuwine’s New Album Will Be Called 'Bachelor Again But Wiser'
Looks like Ginuwine will tap into his new state of singledom for his upcoming 8th studio album, previously titled 'Same Ol G.' As previously reported, the R&B veteran is partnering with long-time collaborator and hit producer Timbaland for the forthcoming opus, now called 'Bachelor Again But Wiser.' "...the new album title is bachelor again but wiser!!!!!!" confirmed Timbaland on Instagram after the two uploaded the above photo on their respective profiles.
Ginuwine captioned: "Me and Timbo the king, I told yall it's about to go down." Ginuwine and Timbaland were magical in the 90s before going their separate ways for a decade (the two linked in 2009 for "Get Involved," a song from Ginuwine's sixth studio album, A Man's Thoughts). During their early years, the two, along with Missy Elliot, worked on the crooner's first two LPs, and produced hits like "Pony" and "So Anxious." It's unclear what kind of route or sound the two will take for the pending project, but with their hit-making history, we're sure it will be dynamite.

Ginuwine Confirms Working With Timbaland On New New Album Titled ‘Same Ol G’
Ginuwine took to his social media accounts today to confirm the news that most were waiting to hear for so long; he’s reunited with Timbaland once again. Not only that, but he stated that Timbaland will be working on his upcoming 2015 album which will be titled “Same Ol G”.
The news was revealed through a series of Instagram posts on his official account. Timbaland is credited for much of Ginuwine’s early success, handling much of the production on his first two albums including the singles “Pony”, “I’ll Do Anything/I’m Sorry”, “Same Ol G”, “What’s So Different”, and “So Anxious”.
They last came together for the song “Get Involved” from Ginuwine’s 2009 album “A Man’s Thoughts” but the reunion was brief. This time, it looks like fans will get much more of what they’ve been waiting for. It should be noted that this announcement comes following a show of nostalgia from Timbaland over the past couple of months.

Timbaland Is Teasing A Missy Elliott x Ginuwine Collaboration
Timbaland just posted on his Instagram Page a picture of Missy Elliott, himself and Ginuwine with a text saying "I got a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!" which could mean that we are gonna get a collaboration by them soon, stay tuned for more Information, in the meanwhile, check this old school Timbo joint with Missy & Ginuwine.

Ginuwine Reflects On 15th Anniversary Of Classic Album '100% Ginuwine'
Everybody knows “Pony.” Ginuwine’s 1996 debut single is synonymous with sex and the timeless art of titillation, immortalized by its own video, Internet meme and the 2012 male stripper drama “Magic Mike.” But the R&B singer born Elgin Lumpkin, Timbaland’s first solo artist and contemporary of Aaliyah, didn’t reach his creative peak until nearly three years later, with the release of sophomore album “100% Ginuwine” on March 16, 1999.
While it never produced a single with the lasting legacy of “Pony” -- from Lumpkin's 1996 debut album “The Bachelor” -- “100%” was the more visionary and expansive collection. Dripping with state-of-the-art productions that, 15 years later, still sound out of this world, it established Ginuwine as one of his genre’s most progressive artists and formed the prototype for Timbaland’s later, Billboard chart-conquering collaborations with the likes of Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado. thanks to The Don.

Ginuwine x YouKnowIGotSoul Interview, Talks 100% Ginuwine Album
Just about a decade ago, Ginuwine released his second album "100% Ginuwine" and proved to the world that there was no such thing as the sophomore jinx. Backed by Timbaland's production on that CD, Ginuwine was able to solidify himself as one of the top stars in R&B with hits like "What's So Different", "So Anxious" and "None Of Ur Friends Business". The multi-platinum album was a success both critically and commercially, but the impact of the CD may be the greatest achievement of all.
The album's influence is definitely noticeable if you begin to think about some of Timbaland's later projects. Some have argued that the "100% Ginuwine" album is the blueprint Justin Timberlake's music with Timbaland. YouKnowIGotSoul had an opportunity to talk to Ginuwine about the creative process behind that album, his thoughts on the upcoming Jodeci reunion, the success of TGT and his plans for his new solo album. Ginuwine also touched on almost giving up music until his fellow group members Tank and Tyrese reenergized him with the TGT project. Thanks to Buddha.

Well once again, the main man "Kyle Ng" from youknowigotsoul.com managed to hook up with Danja for an interview where we finally get some light shed on his work with Timbaland.

Now for those of us curious to hear the Timbaland parts, here it is in text form:
YouKnowIGotSoul: I was introduced to you through a song titled “Betta Half” by Ginuwine. How did that opportunity come about? I know you were working on Timbaland at the time, but how did that particular opportunity come about?
Danja: I actually did that record before I started working with Timbaland. It was just through meeting a bunch of different people. I was pretty young at that time. I actually went to Ginuwine’s house, met him and played him a bunch of tracks. He loved the track and out of that meeting “Betta Half” happened.
YouKnowIGotSoul: The production on that song is very different from what we know from you now. What was the approach with that song?
Danja: Well I always did a lot of different styles of music, but just for Ginuwine it was just a batch of R&B tracks that I gave to him. I was in a real heavy R&B mode at that particular time as well as Hip Hop, but you have to cater the music to the type of artist you are working with.
YouKnowIGotSoul: I know you as well as Keri Hilson and Marcella started out originally working under Timbaland. Talk to me about the grind and journey that you guys went through to develop into who you guys are today.
Danja: It was just getting the opportunity as individuals to enhance our craft outside of the camp we came from. I began to work with Diddy a lot and worked with Bad Boy at Daddy’s House in New York. I would work there. We would have our own rooms to work, so I guess I was just left in my own space to grow and develop myself. I always wanted to develop my own sound and my own style. Listening to a lot of different music, putting a lot this together and working with a lot of different artists, it didn’t lead me any other reason but to come up with something eclectic and something to call my own. Just over time working with a lot of artists and having that opportunity for us to be by ourselves and work separately allowed us to grow.
YouKnowIGotSoul: When you and Timbaland first came out, you guys had this crazy sound that was very unique and ended up blowing everywhere. Talk to me about that creative process and how you guys came up with that particular sound.
Danja: It was just two individuals with two different music minds, being open minded and coming together. That just created something different. I have a different music opinion than what Timbaland has even though we agree a lot on the same things, but we just have a different approach with how we do things. We compromised at that time just for the collaborative effort. I wasn’t trying to do something he did and he wasn’t trying to do something that I did. We just brought something different to the table and the hits that we made were a product of that.
YouKnowIGotSoul: It seemed like every song you guys put out together ended up being a hit from Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado to even Madonna. Do you think that type of success can be replicated or was it because of the timing?
Danja: You never know. I think it has been replicated in the sense that we had the Dubstep movement. I can’t really speak so much for the Dance movement because I think we opened the door for the dance world. Even the Dubstep movement, we opened that door for this broad, international sound. The David Guettas had an opportunity to also have hit records on the side because we already paved the way for that sound. It just really depends, you never know. I think what we did at the time was a product of fun in the studio and not really setting any boundaries or being inside a box. I think it can be replicated. No one knows the recipe. There’s no set thing you can follow to come up with that again. I think when the stars align, it’ll all happen again. Music evolves and I think more than anything, people just have to keep their ears open for things that’s new and different and not really expect the same thing that’s happened over and over. It’ll happen, but it may be in a different form.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Talk about that decision for you to eventually branch out and start your own thing. To a lot of people, it seems like a huge risk because you had a lot of hits working with Timbaland. Talk about that decision and do your own thing.
Danja: It just came from careers going in two different directions. Timbaland was doing his thing touring with Justin and I was still here in the studio working on projects. It wasn’t necessarily a decision, it was just kind of the way things had prevailed. From that point on, things picked up on my end and I started working more and more on different things.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Do you see yourself working with Timbaland in the future?
Danja: You never know. We haven’t planned on anything. We spoke a few times on a couple of different things. I think for the right project, we’ll make up and work. As of now, there is nothing planned.
YouKnowIGotSoul: My personal favorite song that you did is Keri Hilson’s “Where Did He Go?”. Talk about that song.
Danja: That’s a collaboration. That was myself and Timbaland. It was him with the drums and I just played a guitar line. He just heard a sample of what I did and reprogrammed it with the ASR. He did with the ASR. That’s an old throwback track, but it was a collaborative effort. It’s two brains on that record with the drum sound and the melodics from me.

True he made the original beat, but this to me is nothing more than a mainstream interpretation.... You be the judge:
