The Making of Madonna's Hit Song "4 Minutes" with Justin Timberlake

artworks-000217745686-mz2r0d-t500x500
Madonna's decision to team up with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake for her 2008 album "Hard Candy" was not about following trends, but about seizing an opportunity to reshape them in her own unique style. The result was the hit song "4 Minutes," which became one of both stars' biggest hits. The track is a riff-heavy earworm with Timbaland's trademark beats and tics anchoring the strong pairing of two of music's biggest stars. The video, directed by Jonas Euvremer and François Rousselet, features one of Madonna's most conceptual dancing performances, and Timberlake's co-credit on the album marked a first on a Madonna record.

Timbaland: “Madonna Wanted To Give Me A B12 (Vitamin) Shot”

Timbaland revealed recently while working with Madonna in 2008 on ‘Hard CandyMadonna wanted to give him an Injection to stop him from eating. "Madonna, I think, would get me right, just from the discipline part," Timbo said. "I'm always about order and staying on point." "Madonna, I remember when I worked with her, she wanted to give me a B12 (vitamin) shot," Timbaland revealed. "She said, 'Let me poke you right here, it's gonna get you amped,' and that's when I wasn't into fitness, that's when I wanted to eat Five Guys (fast food) every day."

Timbaland has since changed his ways, and is now "very focused" on his physical health, turning to boxing after becoming inspired by Michael B. Jordan's 2018 movie Creed II. "I started off boxing because... I saw 'Creed II'... and I love an athlete's will to go (hard), and that always fascinated me," he shared. "So when I saw the boxing... I said, 'I need to do something like that...'"

Timbaland & Natalie Dormer Talk Working With Madonna

Photos by Charles Sykes. HBO’s Natalie Dormer and rapper/producer Timbaland stopped by Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday and dished what it’s like to work with the Queen of Pop. The producer, who has previously collaborated with Madonna on her song “4 Minutes,” admitted to Andy Cohen that “she’s like a real boss.” He continued, “You kind of be nervous because she’s like very stern.” Timbaland added, “It’s kind of like a challenge.” 33333
Natalie quickly chimed in, “But she likes people who challenge her back.” The Game Of Thrones’ star who is currently promoting her latest Hunger Games film, Mockingjay Part 2, has worked with the singer in the past. Madonna cast the 33-year-old in her 2012 directorial debut film W.E. Agreeing that the "Material Girl" singer likes a challenge, Timbaland said, “She really does. You can’t give into her.

And that’s how she gets her... If you jump back, you’re weak." Madonna isn’t the only big name Timbaland has worked with. The 43-year-old rapper has also collaborated with Justin Timberlake on his 2002 hit song “Cry Me A River.” When asked by Andy if Justin had discussed his former flame Britney Spears during the song process, Timbaland revealed, “Yes.” But that doesn’t mean the song was about the popstar! Instead, Timbaland said the song “was a mystery.”

Danja Interview with YouKnowIGotSoul.com

Well once again, the main man "Kyle Ng" from youknowigotsoul.com managed to hook up with Danja for an interview where we finally get some light shed on his work with Timbaland.
Dig it:

Now for those of us curious to hear the Timbaland parts, here it is in text form:

YouKnowIGotSoul: I was introduced to you through a song titled “Betta Half” by Ginuwine. How did that opportunity come about? I know you were working on Timbaland at the time, but how did that particular opportunity come about?
Danja: I actually did that record before I started working with Timbaland. It was just through meeting a bunch of different people. I was pretty young at that time. I actually went to Ginuwine’s house, met him and played him a bunch of tracks. He loved the track and out of that meeting “Betta Half” happened.

YouKnowIGotSoul: The production on that song is very different from what we know from you now. What was the approach with that song?
Danja: Well I always did a lot of different styles of music, but just for Ginuwine it was just a batch of R&B tracks that I gave to him. I was in a real heavy R&B mode at that particular time as well as Hip Hop, but you have to cater the music to the type of artist you are working with.

YouKnowIGotSoul: I know you as well as Keri Hilson and Marcella started out originally working under Timbaland. Talk to me about the grind and journey that you guys went through to develop into who you guys are today.
Danja: It was just getting the opportunity as individuals to enhance our craft outside of the camp we came from. I began to work with Diddy a lot and worked with Bad Boy at Daddy’s House in New York. I would work there. We would have our own rooms to work, so I guess I was just left in my own space to grow and develop myself. I always wanted to develop my own sound and my own style. Listening to a lot of different music, putting a lot this together and working with a lot of different artists, it didn’t lead me any other reason but to come up with something eclectic and something to call my own. Just over time working with a lot of artists and having that opportunity for us to be by ourselves and work separately allowed us to grow.

YouKnowIGotSoul: When you and Timbaland first came out, you guys had this crazy sound that was very unique and ended up blowing everywhere. Talk to me about that creative process and how you guys came up with that particular sound.
Danja: It was just two individuals with two different music minds, being open minded and coming together. That just created something different. I have a different music opinion than what Timbaland has even though we agree a lot on the same things, but we just have a different approach with how we do things. We compromised at that time just for the collaborative effort. I wasn’t trying to do something he did and he wasn’t trying to do something that I did. We just brought something different to the table and the hits that we made were a product of that.

YouKnowIGotSoul: It seemed like every song you guys put out together ended up being a hit from Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado to even Madonna. Do you think that type of success can be replicated or was it because of the timing?
Danja: You never know. I think it has been replicated in the sense that we had the Dubstep movement. I can’t really speak so much for the Dance movement because I think we opened the door for the dance world. Even the Dubstep movement, we opened that door for this broad, international sound. The David Guettas had an opportunity to also have hit records on the side because we already paved the way for that sound. It just really depends, you never know. I think what we did at the time was a product of fun in the studio and not really setting any boundaries or being inside a box. I think it can be replicated. No one knows the recipe. There’s no set thing you can follow to come up with that again. I think when the stars align, it’ll all happen again. Music evolves and I think more than anything, people just have to keep their ears open for things that’s new and different and not really expect the same thing that’s happened over and over. It’ll happen, but it may be in a different form.

YouKnowIGotSoul: Talk about that decision for you to eventually branch out and start your own thing. To a lot of people, it seems like a huge risk because you had a lot of hits working with Timbaland. Talk about that decision and do your own thing.
Danja: It just came from careers going in two different directions. Timbaland was doing his thing touring with Justin and I was still here in the studio working on projects. It wasn’t necessarily a decision, it was just kind of the way things had prevailed. From that point on, things picked up on my end and I started working more and more on different things.

YouKnowIGotSoul: Do you see yourself working with Timbaland in the future?
Danja: You never know. We haven’t planned on anything. We spoke a few times on a couple of different things. I think for the right project, we’ll make up and work. As of now, there is nothing planned.

YouKnowIGotSoul: My personal favorite song that you did is Keri Hilson’s “Where Did He Go?”. Talk about that song.
Danja: That’s a collaboration. That was myself and Timbaland. It was him with the drums and I just played a guitar line. He just heard a sample of what I did and reprogrammed it with the ASR. He did with the ASR. That’s an old throwback track, but it was a collaborative effort. It’s two brains on that record with the drum sound and the melodics from me.

DJ Freestyle Steve Inside The Box Interview

Very recently the JUKEBOX:DC interviewed our favorite Disc Jockey, Freestyle Steve! Here's the full interview:
In our next Inside the Box feature we interview DJ Freestyle Steve,  Steve is the official DJ for music mogul/production genius Timbaland as well as the exclusive DJ of choice for many NBA and NFL players and others in the music business. The veteran DJ has worked on projects with many of the elite artists in music such as Dr. Dre, Justin Timberlake 50 Cent and Madonna. In our interview, he speaks on what he has been up to since working with Missy & Timbaland, What his dream concert to Dj for, and  what he is currently working on.

Why are you called Freestyle Steve? Were you a freestyler before DJing?
My good friend gave me that name because I never played music. We had an underground radio station, and I wouldn't play Miami music. This was back in 1990-91. He said "you just play all kinds of stuff you just freestyle". The name just stuck. I still follow that same thing, that's what makes me me. I have the word 'freestyle' tattooed on my arm. I never play anything set, I just make it up as I go alone. Like I said, the name stuck, and I still freestyle.

What have you been up to since Missy Elliot & Timbaland aren't active in hip hop?
We've been in the studio with Missy and Timb, those albums are 99% complete. I've been doing my own parties overseas. I recently did Brazil and Marrakech in the same week. I did Madrid, lots of overseas parties. Recently I've gotten back into Miami parties. I recently did my first Miami party on the beach. It's kinda like getting back into the swing of reconnecting with my city. Hearing my voice in the clubs, I've been out of the states for about the past 2 years. Gotta get my people back here. Lebron, D Wade, Santana Moss, it was crazy one night at Rico Love. Club Rush is always an incredible place to DJ.

You have worked with elite artists such as Dr Dre, 50 Cent and Madonna. Can you speak on those projects and involvement.
With Dr Dre we did the launch party for HP Beats By Dre Laptop, in LA. Being in the studio with him and Timb is a great memory. Madonna was an experience of its own. It was Timb and Justin Timberlake in London we were working on the album 'Candy'. Being around her and listening to her stories, DJing a party for her was a once in a lifetime. We went to NYC and did a party for her at The United Nations for her foundation. Madonna doesn't take any shit, she's a true diva.

What would be your dream concert to Dj for?
My opening act would be R Kelly followed by Prince, my intermission artist would be Luther Vandros, he's gonna sing during the intermission. My close out artist is going to be Teddy Pendergrass. That's my guy, I love me some Pendergrass, musically I love him. The crazy thing is the person who would host it would be Justin Timberlake. Could you imagine how crazy that concert would be? That's my concert there!!! People might ask why would I say that, they think I would be only hip hop. I'm totally different than that!!

What songs currently get heavy rotation on your set?
French Montana remix Rick Ross and Diddy, Rihanna with Calvin Harris, Beyonce Love On Top, Timb Break Ya Back, obviously that's in my rotation, Jeezy She Said, Rick Ross Stay Schemin.

What are you currently working on?
My mixtape series, also working on building relationships with different promotors. It was hard to build when I was out on the road. Everyone was asking for me and Timb. Continuing to work and build my brand, trying to keep right. I have some DJs under me right now, DJ Styles from Jacksonville DJ NVS Styles from Miami. Working hard on Timbs and Missy's release. Worked on Demi Lovato's upcoming joint. Doing lots of parties, getting that popping. Working on this deal with the W Hotel, doing my own series in the lobbies of their hotels. I'm going to be on the road traveling with my brother Andre, taking over clubs. Just having fun.
I just had my first experience of Bieber fever, worked with Justin this recently on his new album. He is the new Micheal Jackson, his fans are some true die hard fans. One girl said they flew from Brazil just to get a peak of him. We recorded at Hit Factory. He's becoming a man on this new record, he's got some good stuff. I was really impressed. I didn't think he would do that. I've seen it all and did it all, and eve I was like WOW! International party series, that still is my core. The Timb and Missy tour is coming that's coming real soon so watch out!!!

Timbaland: The E! True Hollywood Story

Alright, enough waiting, here you go all our passionate visitors! Enjoy :)

THS Timbo by YardieGoals
It's a really touching story don't you agree? But that's our master going from being broke to do doing it big right there!

E! True Hollywood Story: Timbaland

The E! True Hollywood Story: Timbaland premieres December 20th 2011 at 9:00 PM on E!.

Quote from the article posted on TY by the Numbers:

"In the span of just a few years, Tim Mosley transformed from a struggling teenager sleeping on an air mattress to a Grammy- winning artist known worldwide as Timbaland. Having collaborated with the likes of Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Madonna, Timbaland’s music is as infectious as it is successful. However, his life has often been far from glamorous. A true survivor, Mosley was shot at close range, nearly dead after a tragic car accident, and has been broke, hungry and on the brink of suicide. Sheer will, determination and a love of music pulled Timbaland up from despair and allowed him to create an unmatched body of work in pop, R&B and hip-hop. For the first time ever on television, Timbaland and his family reveal the details of his triumphant story. This hour-long THS packs some major star power: Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Missy Elliott, Keri Hilson and Ryan Tedder all sat down with E! to share their thoughts on this musical savant and what his work has meant to them."

Looks like it's shaping up to be the most 'fascinating' segment we'll see to end what has been a great year for Timbaland fans!

Madonna - "Latte" MASTERED VERSION

Last year in September a whole lot of Madonna songs recorded during the "Hard Candy" sessions leaked, and among them was the demo version of "Latte", well now today we get the final, mastered version of the song which also includes some backing vocals by Justin Timberlake. Also a quick history of the song: At first it would've appeared on "Hard Candy" but however Timbaland wanted it for Shock Value 2 and call it "La La" yet it never ended up on either albums... Also most Madonna fans insist that the song is called "Pala Tute" (aka Lela Pala Tute, translation: The Madness of Love). So call it what you may, but the main point here is to enjoy this Madonna/Timbaland/Justin Timberlake/Danja collaboration!

Props go to Edwin from the Danja Blog for the heads up on this song!
